Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials

First off, let me say that I believe the best security software available is NOD32 by ESET. But if you insist on using a free anti-virus/anti-malware program there is a new player in the game – Microsoft Security Essentials.

There was a time when the free anti-virus/anti-malware options were Avast, AVG or Avira. I don’t mention Microsoft Defender in the same breath because of it’s less than stellar reputation.

Over the past year or so the 3 popular free anti-virus/anti-malware programs have reduced their features to the point that they only provide real-time monitoring of your system. Email monitoring etc is not included anymore.

Microsoft Security Essentials provides full protection for your system. Independent reviews are all positive, unlike the reviews for the product that it replaces, Defender.

I am using it on the ancient laptop that I am writing this on. Proof positive of it’s light system load.

Bottom line: If you won’t or can’t pay for first class protection (e.g. NOD32) then you definitely should download and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Caveat: You must pass the Microsoft Genuine Advantage test to download it.
